The Hairpin Winding is currently a popular shaped wire winding form. Named for its resemblance to a hairpin, this winding requires soldering on just one end, which simplifies the process and reduces the number of welds.
 
The automotive industry is fast shifting towards hairpin winding because of the effectiveness and affordability it offers. In this configuration, the stator winding of the electric motor is done with hairpins instead of round wires. Specially formed hairpin-shaped flat wire made of highly conductive copper or aluminum are inserted into the stator slots, which allows for better space utilization.
 
A hairpin motor is basically an induction AC motor. So, the stator is not a permanent magnet. Instead, it turns electricity into electromagnetic rotation force by using flat copper wire wrapped around iron cores.
